once a year. Consult your local nursery regarding fertilization for your
area. Apple
requires plenty of sun and good drainage for maximum fruit production.
When you purchase trees try to get 1 year old trees that are 2 - 4 feet tall and
have a 1/2 inch diameter. Make sure the root system is good. Do not buy tress that appear to
be stunted, diseased, or injured. When the trees arrive soak the roots for 1/2 hour before
planting. Place in the hole, then replace the soil, and water
well. It is best to plant your apple trees in the
spring.
Apples require pollen so you must plant a minimum of 2
trees.
History
The fruit has been cultivated since Roman times where ripe apples were used as a
laxative and unripe apples were used to treat diarrhea. In Galencial medicine apples
were cool and moist so the juice was prescribed for fever and eye
infection.
